REVOLUTION AND - WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE HUMAN?
CHLOE PIENE IDALOG WITH MADELEINE SCHWINGE

We are the revolution
Moderated by Kimberly Bradley
Art is a proposal to re:think!
The artist and the public conceive their practice of art as a constructive creative activity.
This is the exercise of a poietic power.
Aesthetic experience can lead to symbolic action. Art can exert a whole range of norm creating effects in society.
Thus, Art in the 21st century is more than ever a social practice—and a call to act.

THE OWLS ARE NOT WHAT THEY SEEM: FEMMAGE TO MARIA ANTO

I come back home and I don’t take my coat off or put down my suitcase. There’s a stranger walking by the walls, black animals are sleeping on the wooden floor. I don’t close the door not to wake them up. Behind a curtain there are huge heaps of dishes to wash and work to do.* We are drawn into a world where nothing is what it seems. Rooted in the artist’s biography – in her everyday life, relations with her children and family, her dreams and thoughts, Maria Anto’s painterly oeuvre is nonetheless phantasmal, suspended in time, brimming with an uncanny atmosphere. Non-human entities take control of this exhibition’s narrative. The allure of these representations comes from oblique statements, the accumulation of meanings originating from poetic introspection, and the use of symbols. This is painting with your instinct.** Engaging in a dialogue with this practice are fantastic creatures from Jan Mo?d?y?ski’s bestiary; Wiktoria Walendzik’s camp sculptures transferred from the digital world; hybrid figures from Chloe Piene’s drawings; and Zuzanna Janin’s daughterly objects – her femmage to her two mothers (biological and spiritual): Maria Anto and Katarzyna Kobro. We are on the border of reality and dream. I have no idea where this will lead us. But I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.*** *fragment of Maria Anto’s dream ** As said by Maria Anto – “Z Mari? Anto rozmawia Ma?gorzata Boche?ska”, in Maria Anto, ed. El?bieta Olszewska (Warszawa: Muza, 2004), p. 83. ** As said by agent Dale Cooper, the main character of David Lynch’s TV series Twin Peaks (1990–1991)

ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION I will be part of roundtable talk with The Curators of Drawing After Bellmer: London Drawing Room on October 21, 2021 along with Paul Noble and........
Coming soon...Juditha Triumphans! by Antonio Vivaldi at Stuttgart Staatsoper - originally written for a girls orphanage with all parts sung by the same.

FIGURE/S: DRAWING AFTER BELLMER
THE DRAWING ROOM, LONDON, UK
Tannery Arts
1-27 Rodney Place
Elephant and Castle
London, UK
Septemer 10 - October 31, 2021
Guide: FIGURE/S: DRAWING AFTER BELLMER
Publication: ON FIGURE/S: drawing after Bellmer Ed. Michael Mewman and Kate McFarlane

The exhibition explores Bellmers lasting influence on artists and thinkers through work by
twenty modern and contemporary artists from Japan, UK, Lebanon, Nigeria, Germany, France and US.
It includes carefully selected drawings made by Bellmer in the 1940s to 60s, by his partner
Unica Zrn in the 1960s, by Richard Hamilton in the 1950s and by the Lebanese artist
Huguette Caland in the 1970s. These modern works are combined with contemporary approaches that
relate to feminism, gender fluidity and anti-racism, including new commissions by Mathew
Hale, Rebecca Jagoe, Aura Satz and Marianna Simnett. Bellmers influence in Japan is
represented by the work of Fuyuko Matsui, Kumi Machida and Tabaimo and the exhibition also
includes Paul Chan, Neil Gall, Sharon Kivland, Jade Montserrat, Jean-Luc Moulne, John Murphy,
Paul Noble, Wura-Natasha Ogunji and Chloe Piene.

Bellmer grew up with the rise of National Socialism in Germany, with its antagonism towards degenerate
bodies and celebration of the ideal human form. Through the production of hundreds of drawings and the two
dolls he constructed in the early 1930s and photographed in disturbing and scandalous scenarios, Bellmer
defigured and refigured the body in pursuit of unimagined sensations. He likened the body to a sentence
that can be dismantled and recomposed, an interest shared with Unica Zrn, the artist, poet and
writer who had a relationship with Bellmer from 1953 until her premature death in 1970. For drawings
after Bellmer, the phallocentric focus of his enquiry is superseded by approaches that
challenge and split the subject to embrace multiplicity and creaturely freedom.
Bellmer wrote: If the origin of my work is scandalous it is because, for me, the world is a scandal.
His work has continued to scandalise and this exhibition takes a critical look at its content whilst
acknowledging Bellmers innovative production of ambiguous and disturbing images that have renewed
significance today in their exploration of androgyny and confusion of the real and the virtual.

A programme of talks, panel discussions and performances will enrich and expand discourse and research around
the issues raised by the exhibition.

ON FIGURE/S: drawing after Bellmer is a book published by MA BIBLIOTHQUE as a companion to the exhibition.
It gathers responses to its themes and is a way to think through and with works of art and their
histories involving multiple textual forms, collage, and drawing, which take the radical and
transgressive energy of Bellmer and Zrn in unexpected directions. Edited by Kate Macfarlane, Michael
Newman, Sharon Kivland and Louis Mason, its 29 contributors include Paul Buck, Jade Montserrat, Bernard
Nol, Francesco Urbano Ragazzi, Aura Satz and Sarah Wilson.

BOOK LAUNCH: "DRAWING PEOPLE" BY ROGER MALBERT, THAMES AND HUDSON, 2015
CHLOE PIENE AND DASHA SHISKIN IN CONVERSATION WITH DIRECTOR BRETT LITTMANN
Wednesday, June 24 6:30pm
The Drawing Center
35 Wooster Street
SoHo, NYC

Artists Chloe Piene and Dasha Shishkin will sign copies of DRAWING PEOPLE by Roger Malbert after the talk

The act of drawing has long been considered the foundation of an Artistic education,
and the life class essential to the formation of an Artist's style and technique.
Yet in the contemporary art world, drawing is increasingly
regarded as a medium in its own right, and the figure as a subject for ongoing exploration well beyond the sketchbook.
Drawing Peoplethe publicationis a thoughtful and beautifully illustrated survey
of the most compelling and inventive drawings of the human form
being produced today by seventy contemporary Artists from around the world.

Join Brett Littman, Executive Director of The Drawing Center, with Artists Chloe Piene and Dasha Shishkin,
whose work is featured in Drawing People for a discussion about their drawing practices and life
within one of the most creatively rich and emotionally powerful forms of art being made today.

CONTEMPORARY DRAWING
TATE, LONDON
INTRODUCTION BY KATHERINE STOUT

"…A group of drawings titled "Self Portrait as a Man" stems from the Artist's question:

"If charged with the task of constructing a Golem, at what point would you decide it's sex, perfected?"

In these images, Piene's slippery, charged line ravels into bodies whose fleshly incarnations maintain an openness, their male and female components unfurling through layers, hovering in an ongoing state of flux. By contrast, the distribution of energy in the full throttle pudendathon of her self-portrait video is dramatically polarized by a close up of the Artist's crotch. The manly voice intoning her name as white cream flows across the lens is also her own. Here, as elsewhere, male and female are unmasked as simplistic tropes, and in their collision an unrest occurs, whereby beauty and delicacy come roaring up out of the dark salt earth."

"Her second "Self Portrait" shows Piene lifted up to the light by dozens of guys at a Heavy Metal gig; she is both a victorious striker held aloft by her teammates and a queen bee surrounded by suitors. Compare the ambiguous erotic dynamics played out here to the drawings of the Dwarf series, where Piene combines her body with that of a male Dwarf. The synthesis of these physical extremes - the elegance and softness of a young woman's body - the hardness and condensed strength of the Dwarfs’ - are embodied in a group of unlikely beings that exhibit a tender disjointedness - like two ghosts manifesting in the same space. The Artist likens these figures to a medieval bestiary where the human, not the animal, is documented in all its unfamiliarity. It is a place where the misunderstood and shrouded aspects of existence rise to the surface to both haunt and reign."

"The work of Chloe Piene is known for its ability to straddle a wide spectrum, in its play of materials and as a certain philosophical position. Her work has made various and diverse associations with prisoners, love letters, failure, and heroic transformation. Piene has been called both brutal and delicate; figurative, forensic, erotic and fantastic. Her video and sculpture utilize the greater sensory impact of noise, time, shadow, and heavy material to dig visibly into the more subterranean levels of experience. She is known widely for her delicate and penetrating drawings, which are typically anchored in the body and skirt the boundaries of fashion and anatomy.
The work selected for the exhibition Astralis" uses penumbral shadow and light. It takes from regal schemes for burial which were a ritual mix of adornment and internment. The installation on exhibit is made from iron, one of the most ancient metals, used to this day in applications as wide ranging as bridges, ships and for purposes of war. In this installation, the heavy material floats as if made from ether, seemingly precious, and delicate, like a pretty necklace. Death is light, and Death is heavy; typical to her work she creates a space which accommodates every extreme.
Chloe Piene was born in 1972 and lives and works in New York."

METAL BELLY/INTERROGATION
PAR DOMINIQUE BALA

1. METAL BELLY
By Chloe Piene, with Paulo Henri Paguntalan and Sue de Beer
A pregnant belly is serenaded by Paulo Henri, lead singer of the band Copremesis. This was set up
2 weeks before the due date of a baby boy in the freight elevator of an industrial building in New York.
We agreed that Paulo would begin in a low, dark, subterranean space, climb, peak, and then return slowly back to darkness.

2. INTERROGATION
By Chloe Piene
Interrogation is taken from real interrogation transcripts; one of a psychopathic serial killer
rapist and the other of a one time child killer rapist, both Canadian. The piece is still in development.
The point is, that all of it is real.
