Hi Matt -

Was really great to see you. And to meet other people from the studio seems like an awesome group. Would love to stop by. Thanks for the bird - and the pears. Glad to hear that Ryle is doing so well.

Just looking through those binoculars gave me some good thoughts. If you get that scope, let me know. I imagine a set up on an adjacent rooftop involving dwarves. It would be so easy and so mean to throw someones clothes over the edge...Did you ever see The Penalty with Lon Chaney? He plays an amputee, very angry and sinister.

I havent considered stopping drawing. But I have thought about doing something different - in a different arena. A vocational vacation - of sorts.

How long are you here for? Im here through the weekend.

Hi matt

September 28, 2005 11:03 PM

hi matt

i sent you something to the studio.

one thing i wanted to tell you about - when i am in hotel rooms i like to make drawings on whatevers around of things to build. ive got three: a tower, a cabin and a tree house. the first two are built into the side of a mountain/hill and have a large underground hall as a main room. the tower is like a light house - but all 3 are in the woods - landlocked. i havent really worked out the tree house because you need really enormous trees and i havent seen too many. but the other two have gotten very detailed - down to the built in bed fixtures in the guest rooms and the design of the closets. im looking at property upstate this november - halfway taking the month off - and looking at studio space in berlin. sort of a ridiculous split but as much as i love it my space in nyc is too small - and im taking advantage of not having a gallery in nyc at this moment.

did you see the brothers grimm? great tower & good trees.

Grandpa Death

October 26, 2005 9:33 AM

Hey matt - sure - come and take a look.

i just bulldozed through LA/London and got a lousy cold in the process. But being home is having a curative effect. As well as the wintry weather - I'm into it. Saw many many shows in London as well as the big spectacular opening of Ecstasy at MOCA. It was meant to be a sort of rave. Psychedelia and optical effects. Confetti flying everywhere. I was pretty into all the the eco styling I saw in Topanga canyon – houses stacked upwards, some of them really teetering at the edge.

hi matt

That would have been fun. There was a lot happening. I am going today to get a new camera because i lost mine in london. Will take pictures of trees up in Ithaca later next week – doing a talk at Cornell. Rave - yes - lame. I saw a lot of charred earth in the aftermath of a forest fire in Simi Valley. Bald and charred. For miles. McCarthy - drawings interesting but the sculptures, very polite. i would have liked it better if he had just thrown them all into a big heap.

My friend at Phaidon is drumming up ideas for curators and writers for Vitamin V (video) she was asking me about interesting people, thinkers, curators in Asia who might be tapped in to work happening there. I know you have spent quite a lot of time there lately, and I was wondering if maybe you have some opinions on this. How are you otherwise? I hope well. I am back in the city again - in the studio.

Something I can use – carved – can splinter – but still – wood. Something that goes in – or can be fixed into place. That green stuff – wicked. Good if you want to wrap yourself around a goat horn. Scott Kelley is the lead from Neurosis he put out a solo acoustic – simple. Maybe you also know Zeni Geva from Japan, both on Neurot recordings. One that night space would open so she could emerge and bind with the Dagda. my first time is really in 2 parts first was to a horse - riding - banging against the saddle second to the farrier he asked me to marry him. i told him no, "because i have to go to new york to become an artist" and he said "well why cant you stay in ireland and paint all the beautiful landscapes here" still I think about that.

Matthew

It was so great to see the film. And everyone at the party. And you as well.

There is a lot about this online, but here's a start - it's hetero unlike the first thing I read about this:

I first realized I was a Delphinic Zoophile when I was 12 years old, which is when I had my first sexual encounter with a dolphin. This is not that particular occasion, since my first lover was brutally killed in an act of sensless violence that I will never forgive, or forget. She continues to live in my memories, though...

The plastic wrap had a lot of static electricity in it and it clinged to the glass on your frame and pulled it face forward down onto the ground. It does suck ass. Really sorry about this.

Looking forward to seeing you,

M

what a nice

November 13, 2006 10:40 AM

surprise!!!!!!

cured me of my jet lag - totally!

awesome.

today i will send samples of the vellum to your studio.

FYI

all modern day vellum - is not really vellum. real vellum is made from animal skin. vellum paper that you get in pads or rolls is a hybrid mix of paper pulp and plastic. plastic behavior becomes evident if its marred, heated, cut, made wet, scored, folded or put into a humid situation. i have yet to meet someone who has hands on experience repairing it - although there havent been any situations this extreme - so far. i put a call into moma also. whitney conservators did not know what to do when we once had a issue with contraction & humidity. they had no idea.

xchloe

ps

you are welcome to come see my space if you are ever in the hood. that goes for berlin also.

Re: hinge question mmastrubator

November 14, 2006 6:41 PM

hi chloe,

i've asked ann about the hinges, and yes it had been rehinged. in fact she thought (but not completely sure) that it was rehinged twice. first time by the whitney conservation dept. when the drawing was in the biennial. she was told this by someone who no longer works here. second time when it fell here, the hinges were loosened and so were replaced when it was reglazed. sounds like the hinging material is wrong? would you like the hinges to be changed to a different type? another question: for the philadelphia exhibition date, what should we say is the deadline for conservation completion/shipping deadline?

best,

m

minty4321@aol.com

Re: hinge question mmastrubator

November 15, 2006 12:44 PM

cool, thanks for this info.

sounds like step 1:

bring cut velum tests to scheidemann to see what he can do. i discussed this with him and he's up for the challenge.

step 2: present the tests to you. you decide if you want the restoration done.

step 3: photograph the piece while it is out of its frame.

step 4: bring the work to a/z so lim can rehinge.

step 5: complete by shipping deadline of dec 13 approx.

Re: framing specs

November 16, 2006 5:26 PM

hi chloe,

a little update. seems that schiedemann has thrown his back out since i saw him last week. his top 2d conservator, jonhanna, is going to come down to look at the drawing and to bring a test swatch back to the lab. in the meantime ann will contact another paper conservator in the event that christian's back prohibits the work. i'm over in iceland now, but not out of the loop. ann gale at my studio will keep you posted as she gets more feedback and test results for you to look at. it's fucking cold here,

hi matt

how are you

just released a whole lot of stuff this weekend.

are you at sea?

im seeing scheidemann tomorrow. he is really taking care. in time for the DK show. looking forward to being there - in person. i have almost no control over install - but im coming back for the opening 2/2.

mmasturbator should have like, a t strap - which secures it to the wall. this way if it gets knocked or pulled it ll have a nice hefty line holding onto it from behind. its really made to be hung up - so - show it any other way and it has to be made secure - not free standing.

i hope that is clear. i once suspended a whole christmas tree with fishing line and eye hooks - because it was wobbly. but i wouldnt use fishing line for this. strap, clipped to the d rings, clipped to the wall.

here is a scale for you, my best, from brooklyn

Dear Friends,

This is an invitation to an afternoon/evening of performance. On Sunday, April 15, three pieces will be performed in my new studio in Long Island City. Jonathan Meese, Michael Rees, and myself, together with Jonathan Bepler, will be participating. For Bepler and I, this is a technical rehearsal for a work which will be performed in Manchester in July, and we feel compelled to stage this test in front of a small audience of friends. Please come at 4:00. The first performance will start promptly at 4:30.

Directions

Subway: Vernon/Jackson stop on the 7 train. Walk north on Vernon Ave., and turn left onto 44th Drive and proceed all the way down to the East River. The entrance to the studio is through a chain link fence which is next to the Water's Edge Restaurant. From there, walk 50 yards to the end of the warf, and the entrance to the studio is on your left (facing the East River).

Driving: take Midtown Tunnel. Stay to right side of toll booths, as you will be exiting immediately after the toll onto the Borden Ave exit #13. Turn right on Borden Ave. Take a right at the first light, then veer left (don't turn) onto Vernon Ave. Travel north on Vernon Ave., and turn left onto 44th Drive and proceed all the way down to the East River. The entrance to the studio is through a chain link fence which is next to the Water's Edge Restaurant. From there, walk 50 yards to the end of the warf, and the entrance to the studio is on your left (facing the East River).

There will be no refreshments, so we are encouraging people to bring their own. There are several delis on Vernon Ave 5-6 blocks away from the studio. Due to the graphic nature of the performance, it's my opinion that this will not be suitable for kids. And finally, we'd like to ask that no photography is taken during the performances.

Please reply to this email if you plan on attending.

Hoping to see you there,

Matthew Barney

matt - if you have a minute - this just in re: the show that went with the skull poster. my first ever anything made with cast objects (mostly rolls of duct tape -)

By aanews | July 11, 2008 - 5:38 pm

I watch mostly public television, and one of my favorite programs is ‘Secrets of the Dead’. This hour long show combines elements of history, archeology, and forensic research in unraveling the ‘mysteries’ of numerous grim historical events. Several weeks ago, one segment investigated the ‘secret graveyards’ of organized crime, specifically, a location in the borough of Queens, New York. In the final scenes, the skeletal remains of gang members murdered in the early 80’s were unearthed. Through these somber images, I reconnected to my encounter with Chloe Piene’s sculpture, whose exhibition at Gasser & Grunert in Chelsea had closed a few weeks earlier. The human skull, that timeless logo of death, is having an especially good year both in and out of the arts. Here in Manhattan, poor Yorrick advertises a production of Hamlet, while on ‘The Simpsons’ one of Bart’s trio of tormentors at Springfield elementary sports death’s head on a black t shirt. And there’s that Damien Hirst. Hirst, like other art provocateurs periodically gets it exactly right, as did Warhol’s ‘Disaster’ series, which offered up a ‘little death’ during Pop’s euphoric zenith. Hirst is Hirst, but his diamond encrusted platinum skull, may be, as Carl Andre once noted (about Warhol) the art we deserve right now. Hirst’s stated admiration of Mexican Christian and pre-colonial religious iconography, assures his ordination into a select, male priesthood of artists who transforms that which is without value into the eternal, piss into gold. Piene cites the influence of Joseph Beuys in her work, and his presence is felt here primarily in the automatism of her drawings. Along with Warhol, Beuys was one of the ‘catholic’ of 20th century artists. No matter how contrived, his ‘death’ and resurrection on the Russian front is potent myth central in the construct of (maybe) the greatest messiah complex in contemporary art. Apart from his performances, what Beuys left behind appears to be disintegrating in the virtrine/relicquary, awaiting reanimation. The dead, as a million zombie movies confirm, shall walk again. Beuys’s gaunt features (I witnessed his ‘Coyote’ performance at Rene Block Gallery in ‘74) suggested Mary Shelly’s shambling, romantic monster- wearing a hat and a fisherman’s vest. Curiously, it is Warhol’s (no picture of health himself) uneven production that resonates in his absence, and we have instituted his saintly musings as the Word of Andy. Both Beuys and Warhol share incidents in their biographies where they returned from the dead, but only one’s art still ‘lives’One hopes that Chloe Piene will never, or has not, suffered the trauma of either Joseph or Andy; her art reaches further back to the macabre tendencies of the Northern renaissance, and earlier. The charcoal drawings could read like Bronze Age eroticism, also channeling the bitter Grosz and the twisted DeKooning, among others. But my real engagement was with her sculpture, every one of which could stand as a study for some unspeakably dark monument. These untitled assemblages of plastilina, wax, wood and plastic, maintained a clammy, fresh from the studio appearance. They, of course, are of skulls, modeled by hand and built up from casts of teeth, or maybe jawbone. Some pieces are formed into clumps, while others appear halted in the process of excavation, recalling that dank mafia resting place. Piene’s skulls hold us at a cautious distance, and a visit to this smart gallery unexpectedly becomes a hushed tour through a catacombs. As suggested by her ‘Golem’ drawing, inert materials can be, through occult practices, transformed into living tissue. But nothing is living or breathing here. There is also a unmistakable resemblance to fecal matter in several of the works. What creature could have produced such deposits? – The actor gobbling Tyrannosaurus Rex in ‘Jurassic Park?’Simultaneously waste material, carnage, grotesque décor, and self portraiture, Chloe Piene advances the long history of the skull in art, moving it beyond juvenilia. Someone said recently that ‘the sword is not an antique’, and we need not worry about the skull becoming one either; it is a growth industry.

why did you have the bands play facing away from the water/ crowd?

no one punches anybody from the side. the gaping jaws of hell were never painted - from a side angle. having to walk in & around just to get a view-in made me think of this.

I guess for the same reason I install sculpture that way. To defeat the image/overcome the diorama. Will be a more questionable strategy tonight, with many more people expected. I like to witness action in the round. Even the possibility of standing behind the band/amps excites me, in spite of the compromised sound. Great to see a drummer from behind. Action, not concert. Sounds, not songs. Death to images.

hey Chloe,

here's the contact at the foundry:

Barbara Mistalski elickercasting@mac.com

Allen Woodriff is a tech guy who came to my studio and took a look at the molds. he was cool, and seemed pretty flexible.

i suppose it would be he who would oversee the casting. Barbara is an administrative type.

some thing need fixing i noticed

Big Hands, the Print, has no image associated with it - FYI all images in AB must be lo-res. If none exists in the archive it must be created and saved there as such. put LR in the file name so we know thats what it is. Then link to appropriate AB record.

Big Hands, the AP numbering is not appearing quite right in the record, tho the info is there, can u fix by filling in the miss AP# info (?)

On the status "Location" when updating this there is a drop down menu where ive manually filled in a handful of collectors. The main question for AB would be how to avoid that (since there are a lot of them) and simply link to the collector info in the rolodex. There must be a better way, right? Loew has no notes in it - is this correct? Need to check status of this whether in Israel (consigned) or returned to studio

Going forward, need to make a distinction in Current Location between Nathalie Obadia Paris and Nathalie Obadia Bruxelles (2 separate locations, 1 gallery) Envelope with keys in it are with Moishe at the refrigeration place next door, just ask for the envelope not for the keys.

Speak shortly,

Hey C Happy TG. No turkey in Iceland. Haggis. Fuck it, I need to get back to NY. going on the 2nd Dec. Yeah St Anns is a good place. It's not as 'creative community' based as it used to be. since it has become such a desirable private school, and high school students are being placed well in universities, there's more of the professional world families moving in (i think this has been the case over the last 10 years). super competitive to get in. most all of the openings seem to go to siblings of current students, or alumns, or kids of teachers. few slots remain. all that said, it's still a really good environment. the kids there all seem really happy, and smart as hell. i definitely preferred the vibe there to other private schools i looked at.
